The temptation was too strong...
These images were haunting...the white of the icebergs, the blue of the sky and the sea...and the fauna...unique! But most and foremost, it was seeing the ships leaving from Ushuaia towards Antarctica! And there, after a few drinks too many at the Irish pub and a banner at our hostel: $3195 for an 11 day-cruise to Antarctica, when prices usually go as high as $70,000! So, in the heat of the moment, we decided to go...to meet with penguins, whales and this fragile and still unexplored land...
Wait...hang on a sec....The clock is ringing?? It's 8am... time to wake up?? This was only a dream...Damned!!

Will anyone find the meaning of this road sign? Any suggestions welcomed!
Ushuaia at last...
Southernmost destination in the world (or so they say...there is "Puerto Williams" further south, in Chile...) and well worth a detour, at least for the fauna and flora. The landscape reminded us of Iceland, its northern couterpart... That's where all tours are leaving to go to Antartica. Our Dorm-mate (who happened to be a French expat in the USA) is going there tomorrow....and we are so jaleous!
Ushuaia enfin...

After El Chalten, it was time to relax, recharge our batteries (electronic and our own ones) and do the washing...
Then, after a short stopover in Rio Gallegos (nice enough place!), it was time to go to Ushuaia...
Now...How do we know when we are travelling rough?
  1. 14hrs on a bus, 5 hours spent crossing borders (this part of South America is so divided that you have to cross the border twice to go to Ushuaia...Argentina-Chile and Chile-Argentina)...
  2. Arid lanscapes, flat plains with nothing...absolutely nothing...
  3. A "Lomito completo" (Argie hamburger) in the middle of nowhere...
  4. Blocked toilets in the bus and movies in Spanish (still enjoyed "Los quattro Fantasticos"!)...
  5. and an arrival in the middle of the night....
THIS is rough travelling! This is what we like!

Question: comment sait-on quand on voyage à la dure?

El Chalten and Fitz Roy in the back
Back from 3 days in El Chalten, 2 spent hiking...
First encounters in the arid landscapes of Patagonia on the Argentinian side at the Park National Los Glacieres North... The landscape is magnificent, the pictures will speak for themselves. On the trekking side, we are living the life of hikers (See "vie quotidienne" section of this blog). Stayed overnight in a refuge with nothing else but a basic bed/matress (and, yes, we were the first Irish people to stay there! Viva Irlanda!). Lots of hikers though, full of passion and one ambition: climb the Fitz Roy mountain...
