Viti Crater in the mist...again / Askja, dans le brouillard....a nouveau |
walking on the Moon/marcher sur la Lune |
From Myvatn, we had the first (and probably only, on this trip at least) opportunity to see a glimpse of the country’s interior so we booked a tour for the day towards the Askja region. Askja (the name of the volcano) is a huge caldera (50-sq-km) formed by a massive eruption in 1875 that created the huge crater and the scenery around, shaped by huge lava fields everywhere. The region was very inhospitable and quite bleak to say the least. It is actually in this region that the NASA sent its astronauts from the Apollo missions for training on lunar landings, as the scenery replicates the one of the Moon. We spent the day there and climbed on top of the Caldera, hoping to see the lake that has since filled the crater. Unfortunately, the weather was dreadful again, with lots of snow and fog all the way. Actually, something that was mentioned several times to us during this journey is how cold the months of May and June have been this year, hence the presence of snow seen in the higher altitudes. Despite the lack of views from the top, this was quite an enjoyable day out.
